'Diabetes University' set for Saturday at Ogeechee Tech

    The American Diabetes Association is sponsoring “Diabetes University” on Saturday at Ogeechee Technical College — a free event for all people affected by diabetes. Doors open at 8:15 a.m. with three sessions covering nine topics.  
    “Diabetes University 2009” is presented by Ogeechee Technical College and Statesboro Diabetes Support Group. It is a half-day educational program designed to educate all people affected by the disease.  The program is recommended for people with diabetes, as well as family and friends of people with diabetes who have a desire to learn more about managing the disease.
    Pre-registration is encouraged for the educational program and space is limited.  All registration includes three educational sessions, free health screenings, exhibits, free samples and the latest information, products and services relating to diabetes.

Session I - Topics
(9 - 9:45 a.m.)
    Diabetes 101 presented by Dr. Sergio Dalsania.  It's essential for people with diabetes to take care of themselves.  Chances are you have a million questions running through your head.  Which type of diabetes do I have?  What affects my blood sugar?  How do I check my blood sugar?  This class is for people who are recently diagnosed with diabetes, or those needing basic information.
    The Eyes Have It presented by Dr. Judith M. Piros, MD, Ophthalmology Associates.  Diabetes is the leading cause of new blindness in this country.  Key ways to preventing and/or delaying diabetes-related eye problems such as glaucoma, retinopathy, cataract and corneal disease will be covered.  
    Making Smarter Food Choices for a Healthier You presented by Cathy Shriver, RN, MHS, MSN, CDE, CPT.  People with diabetes have the same nutritional need as anyone else.  Along with exercise and medications, nutrition is important for good diabetes control.

Session II  
(10 - 10:45 a.m.)
    Sink Your Teeth into Proper Dental Care presented by Jarrett Walden, DMD.  Periodontal (gum) disease is more common in people with diabetes.  Among young adults, those with diabetes have about twice the risk of those without diabetes.  Keep your teeth healthy so you can keep your teeth.

    Serious Sole Searching: Love Your Feet presented by Dr. Howard Gale.  Diabetes can cause nerve damage that makes it hard to tell if you have a foot injury.  When foot injuries go unnoticed, they can worsen and become infected, sometimes leading to hospitalization or even amputation.

Session III
(11 - 11:45 a.m.)

    Don't Kid Around with Your Kidneys presented by Dr. Courage Atekha.  Diabetes is the leading cause of kidney failure, accounting for 44% of new cases in 2005.  What are the symptoms of kidney failure?  How do you keep your kidneys healthy?
