Council expected to approve towing ordinance changes

The Statesboro City Council is expected to approved an ordinance regulating involuntary towing inside the city limits, including setting a maximum fee of $70 for a vehicle being towed without the owners consent.

            The proposed ordinance came about after city officials received numerous complaints from citizens, including many Georgia Southern students, regarding towing practices inside the city. Currently, some towing and wrecker companies are charging $125 or more for an involuntary tow.

            Also required in the proposed ordinance is for the towing company to get a document signed by the person requesting the tow.

            Other items on Tuesday's agenda include:

            * a moment of silence in remembrance of personnel director Woody Chapman, who died last week;

            * two motions to adopt two separate pieces of property into the city limits. Both would require a second approval at the city's next meeting;

            * a motion to award a bid in the amount of $20,278.77 to Rozier Ford for a sanitation dumpster transport truck.

            The city's meeting will begin at 6 p.m. in the city hall council chambers.
