I don't know about everyone else, but I have always felt that the former location of the Sonny's Barbeque on the Statesboro Bypass was a great site for a restaurant, even though it did not work out for Sonny's.
I know that it has been empty for quite a long time, but as many of you have noticed, the property has been sold. So, here is the skinny. The partnership group that has purchased it is SEC Foods, and they are going renovate the building for a Fuzzy's Taco Shop slated to open this coming January.
If you go to Athens, you may be familiar with the concept. There is Fuzzy's located at 265 North Lumpkin near the Georgia Theater (which is downtown), and it is also owned by this group.
George Lebus, a spokesman for the group, said SEC Foods has franchise rights for development in the southeastern United States.
"We have had a steady stream of students from Georgia Southern tell us that we need to open one in Statesboro," Lebus said. "We came down and looked, and felt this was an excellent place to develop."
Lebus said the best way to describe Fuzzy's cuisine is Baja Mexican.
"Everything is very fresh, and made right here in the restaurant every single day," he said. "We buy our ingredients local, and have them delivered daily. Our food is in the very moderate price range."
Lebus said once the renovation is complete, the restaurant will have three separate patios, one being a special events patio.
"We are going to take the building and divide it into a space where both college students and families can enjoy themselves," he said. "It will be fast casual where you go through the line, place your order, and then it is prepared in the kitchen. Your name or number will be called, and you can pick it up at the counter in five to seven minutes. There will also be a full bar to order from."
There are currently 42 Fuzzy's locations around the country, and the parent company is headquartered in Ft. Worth, Texas.
"At this time, we are looking at 15 to 20 sites," Lebus said. "We are very excited about the concept, and how well it has done in Athens. It is just great, fresh food, at a great price."
