The McDonald's Corporation will hold its first national hiring day April 19 to fill 50,000 openings at its restaurants nationwide. Brian Carter, director of operations for the three McDonald's locations in Statesboro and one in Sylvania, said he expects to hire 30 new employees on that day.
"We are really excited about the event," Carter said. "We are always looking for smiling faces ready to go to work."
Based in Oak Brook, Ill., McDonald's said it is making a concerted effort to add staff as its business improves and as more of its restaurants stay open 24 hours a day. McDonald's sees this event as an opportunity to attract employees in a tough job market.
It is also trying to shed the negative connotation of employment at the fast-food chain, once dubbed "McJobs." About half of its franchisees and more than 75 percent of its managers started as store workers.
"I started working at McDonald's 25 years ago," Carter said. "It really has changed. There is a tremendous amount of flexibility now, and a lot of opportunity to move up and make it a career. We provide all of the training that you will need."
The new positions include a combination of both seasonal and sustaining full-time and part-time positions based upon individual restaurant needs.
"With the economy the way it is, every job counts," Carter said. "McDonald's has decided to do a National Hiring Day in order to fulfill some of those job needs. Our business is strong and that is because of our employees. We look forward to hiring people who want to build a career within the McDonald's family."
In a town with a diverse pool of potential employees to pull from, Carter hopes there is good response on April 19.
"We really are very blessed here in that the university provides a large pool from which to hire," he said. "I want people to know that our workforce contains high school and college students, working mothers looking for flexible hours, retirees, and those that want to make a career with McDonald's. There is a place here for everyone."
Each McDonald's in the area will have someone on site to accept applications on hiring day. Carter said bring a form of identification and your Social Security card. Also, you must be at least 16 years old to apply.
"On the 19th, that is all you will need," he said. "Come to any of our four locations, and someone will be there to talk with you."
The McDonald's restaurants in Statesboro are located on Fair Road (near East Georgia Regional Hospital), on Northside Drive (at the intersection of Northside and Lovett Road), and inside of Walmart. The Sylvania location is on West Ogeechee Street.
