Kelly M. Smith, PharmD, was granted tenure in her role as associate professor, pharmacy practice and science, at the University of Kentucky College of Pharmacy.
Smith, a Statesboro native and Statesboro High School graduate, received her pharmacy degrees from the University of Georgia, where she was an active member of Zeta Tau Alpha Fraternity.
Smith is the daughter of Kenneth and Janice Smith of Statesboro.
Smith also was selected to serve as an American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy (AACP) Academic Leadership Fellow in a program designed to prepare pharmacy faculty for roles as future academic leaders. In recognition of her service to the profession and the organization, she will also be named a Fellow of the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (FASHP) in June of this year.
Dr. Smith is a medication use policy clinical specialist and director of the Postgraduate Year One Pharmacy Residency Program at the University of Kentucky Hospital. In the latter role, Dr. Smith has directly overseen the training of more than 60 residents who have gone on to careers in pharmacy practice, academia and industry. She is also a past recipient of the University of Kentucky Pharmacy Residency Program Preceptor of the Year Award. Her contributions to residency training at the national level are most notable for her stint as immediate past chair of the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP) Commission on Credentialing, the body charged with accrediting the more than 800 pharmacy residency programs across the United States, as well as developing the corresponding standards for residency training. In light of her expertise in residency training, Dr. Smith has assumed the newly created position of director, Residency Program Advancement, for the University of Kentucky College of Pharmacy.
