Statesboro and Bulloch County firefighters assisted Bryan County firefighters Thursday in battling a blaze that consumed over 400 acres, said Bryan County Administrator Phil Jones. The fire started back up again Thursday after having been extinguished Sunday, he said. The blaze threatened structures and 71 homes were evacuated. Twenty-three fire trucks and over 100 firefighters from Bulloch, Evans, Liberty, Chatham and Effingham arrived to help with the fire, as well as officials from the Georgia Forestry Commission, he said. The state had a spotter plane and fire officials also had two helicopters making water drops. The flames were extinguished before any structures were damaged, but the Georgia Forestry Commission lost a tractor that was caught up in the flames while the operator was cutting fire breaks. No one was injured, Jones said.
