The "Broadway in the Boro" event, which benefits two worthy causes, is set for Saturday evening at Statesboro High School.

The event, now in its fifth year, starts at 6 p.m., when desserts will be served in the school's cafeteria. The "Broadway" variety show follows at 7 p.m. in the auditorium.

One of the organizations receiving funding from the event is the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, which is the world's largest voluntary organization dedicated to blood cancer, according to Judi Downs, local LLS volunteer.

"Our mission is to cure leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin's disease and myeloma and improve the quality of life of patients and their families," she said. "We do a specific fundraiser for the LLS because monies for blood cancer research typically fall behind those contributed to the more high profile diseases such as breast cancer. If LLS were not here, blood cancers would not have the amazing survival rates that we see today."

A portion of the funds from the event also goes to the SHS fine arts department.

Besides benefiting those causes, "we are delighted to be honoring Ms. Libba Smith, a lymphoma survivor, a champion of LLS, and a terrific lady who has helped us organize this event each year," said SHS drama teacher Eddie Frazier.

Frazier and SHS choral director Lisa Muldrew are again co-chairing the show. The grand piano onstage that will accompany the performers will be played this year by Mark Murphree, a structural engineer at Gulfstream and who also leads "The 'Boro" service at Pittman Park United Methodist Church.

Selections for the evening include scenes, dances and music from a variety of shows such as "Hairspray," "Company," "The Lion King," "Monty Python's Flying Circus" and "Aida" by Elton John.
