The mother of a boy killed Tuesday night in Claxton remains in critical condition after she and her son ran into the path of an oncoming van, according to reports.
Eight-year-old Jorge Luis Ortega was killed in the accident and pronounced dead upon arrival at a local hospital, said Georgia State Patrol Post 45 Trooper Brent Hammond.
His mother, Amelia Camarillo Rodriguez of Hagan, was airlifted to Memorial University Medical Center in Savannah in critical condition, he said.
The accident took place on Highway 301 just inside the Claxton city limits around 7:40 p.m., he said. Rodriguez, 32, and her son had just finished shopping at Family Dollar and were crossing the road when the driver of the van, Henry Fields, 55, Claxton, approached over a hill and could not stop in time to avoid striking the two, Hammond said.
Fields was not reported to be injured and no charges were filed in the accident, he said.
