A “friendly boxing match” at an Anthony Street home Monday quickly turned bad when a participant became angry and started firing shots.

Alize Coreale Wright, of Cypress Lake Road, was involved in a “friendly boxing match… with gloves and all,” around 12:30 p.m. Monday at the Anthony Street location, boxing with an unnamed person, said Statesboro Police Community Information Specialist Madison Warren.

The exchange of blows started as a mutual combat exercise just for fun, but soon tempers flared and things “went wrong,” she said.

Warren did not disclose reasons why Wright, 21, became angry, but said he “got out a handgun and started shooting down the street.”

Fortunately no one was injured, but immediately after shooting at the victims, Wright fled. Someone reported the incident and within minutes police responded to the area, searching for Wright’s vehicle, according to police radio traffic during the search.

They did not immediately find Wright, but he later turned himself in, she said.

He was taken to the Bulloch County Jail on charges of two counts of aggravated assault. According to jail records Tuesday, Wright is being held without bond until he faces further court hearings.
