Twenty-five years ago, tanks of the People's Army rolled into Tiananmen Square, crushing a popular protest for liberty and killing hundreds, if not thousands, of unarmed civilians gathered there. The replica of the Statue of Liberty, which served as a symbol of Chinese citizens' cry for freedom, was toppled. People's Army troops fired into crowds, beat protesters and ran over civilians with their tanks.
