The Chocolate Run draws 740, raises more than $50K

Participants in the 2019 Chocolate Run are off to the races in the fog. The race, now in its seventh year, was held on February 23.

    The 2019 Chocolate Run, which benefits Open Hearts Community Mission, was held February 23. This year's event raised $50,500, with $3,000 coming from the green bow campaign, during which volunteers made and sold green bows to be displayed around town.

Statesboro's sweetest race is now in its seventh year and, as always, included a 5K, 10K and fun run. This year's event drew 740 people. 

Micah D'Arcangelo of Statesboro took first place in the 5K male overall. Second place was claimed by Chason Brogdon of Lyons, while Trevor Wright, also of Statesboro, took third.

Female overall winner in the 5K was Whitley Waldrop of Statesboro. Laura Brannen of Register took second place, while Mylissa Gregory took third. Both Waldrop and Gregory are from Statesboro.

In the 10K male results, Shawn Bittner of Statesboro took first place. Bodie Fox, from Rome, took second place, while Chris Caplinger of Statesboro, came in third.  

Female winners in the 10K were Christi Ballagh of Brooklet, first place; Jenny Highsmith, of Statesboro, second place; and Erin Burton, also of Statesboro, third place.
