BROOKLET — The Southeast Bulloch Lady Yellow Jackets were right in the thick of things Friday night against visiting Westside. With a two-point lead to start the second half, SEB looked like it was on its way to a region 3-AA win.
"The third quarter was a killer," said SEB head coach Milton Williams. "We had opportunities, but our guards just couldn't make the plays that were available."
The Jackets didn't score a point in the third period, giving the Lady Patriots a chance to take the lead for good and hold on for a 33-24 victory.
Westside only scored six points of its own in the third quarter, but SEB didn't put in a basket until there was 2:07 left in the game.
Felicia Richardson led WHS (5-8, 3-2) with 12 points and Dominique Watson brought down five rebounds. Richardson and Aishya Wofford had four points each in the fourth to put the game out of reach. Wofford finished with 10 points and 10 rebounds.
The Lady Patriots jumped out to a 10-0 lead in the first before SEB's Lauren Akins came in to provide a spark off the bench. Akins sank four free throws and got an offensive rebound off a miss which turned into an easy look for Jasmin Sandifer (who also came off the bench). Sandifer was fouled on the play and made both of her free throws. The Yellow Jackets trailed 10-6 after one, all of their points coming from the line.
Southeast didn't hit a field goal until the 4:28 mark of the second quarter on a Brittany Carter 3. The shot tied the game at 12, but it was the only score of the night for Carter, who was double-teamed throughout the contest.
Westside surged back with four straight points before SEB (5-8, 1-5) ended the half on a 6-0 run. Freshman forward Ashley Clifton's putback gave SEB its only lead at 18-16. Clifton scored a team-high nine points, pulled down seven rebounds and registered a block.
"(Ashley) did a good job for us," said Williams. "She was on the glass, she made some baskets and she played real tough inside. "
Southeast shot 11 of 16 from the line while giving the Lady Pats just seven opportunities from the charity stripe.

The Westside Patriots turned up the defensive intensity in the second half Friday night, holding Southeast Bulloch to just 6 of 18 shooting and running away with a 59-35 victory. Scott Adams' game-high 20 points and the play of point guard Jamal Crayton led WHS (11-5, 4-1) in the win.
Southeast trailed by just four going into the second half, but was outscored 38-18 the rest of the way.
"I told the kids that was a different defensive team than what we saw in the first half," SEB head coach John Page said. "I really thought we were executing our offense pretty well toward the end of the second quarter. We just never got back in our offense."
The final margin was Westside's biggest of the game despite jumping out to a 16-4 first quarter lead. The Patriots ended the quarter on a 14-2 run, capped by Crayton's off-balance 3 from the wing at the buzzer. The Yellow Jackets turned the ball over seven times and shot just 2 of 14 from the field during the stretch.
After an Adams three-point play made it 19-4, SEB (2-14, 0-6) woke up and went on a 7-0 run to cut the lead to 19-11. The Patriots would be held scoreless over the final 5:56 of the half and SEB closed the gap to 21-17 before halftime. It would be the closest the Jackets would get.
"Right after the break coach (Monte Major) said we're going to win this game and I think we really believed it," said Page. "When we were trying to score and keep up with them, we'd come down and not score, it got kind of demoralizing. But the kids still got their heads up and they’re going to continue to keep working."
Crayton finished with 12 points for WHS while Keith Ross led SEB with eight. James Scott was held to just three points and Tony Raymond five. Raymond and Scott were a combined 4 of 23 from the field.
Southeast will get back on the court tonight when they host Jefferson County at 5 p.m.
