SEB, Screven dealt tough losses

    Southeast Bulloch and Screven County were both sent to the losers bracket Thursday in the opening round of the GHSA Class AA Elite Eight.
    The Lady Yellow Jackets were shut down by Rutland,  out of Macon, losing 7-0.
    Southeast was held hitless by the Hurricanes out of 5-AA until the seventh inning when Ashley Clifton broke up the no-hitter with a single.
    The Jackets will play Savannah Christian, a team they beat in the South Sectional last week in Savannah, at 11 a.m. today. SEB must win four games in a row to advance to the championship round on Saturday.
    The Lady Gamecocks (18-7) were dealt the same blow, falling to Greater Atlanta Christian School.
    The Spartans (35-1) scored three in the third and three in the sixth and held SCHS to just five hits. The Gamecocks also committed four errors in the loss.
    Screven will face LaFayette out of Region 7B-AA  today at 11 a.m. The Ramblers fell to Berrien County in the first round, a team Screven lost to in the South Sectionals last week in Savannah.
    The Gamecocks. like the Jackets, must win four games to advance to the championship round on Saturday. The two would meet at 7 p.m. today if neither loses.
