SEB, Screven advance in state softball

            SAVANNAH – Ciera Weaver singled in Kelly Hadden to give the Southeast Bulloch Lady Yellow Jackets a dramatic 1-0 victory over Brantley County Friday and move within one victory of qualifying for the Elite 8 of the Class AA state softball tournament.

            Megan Barnwell pitched a no-hit shutout in the first game of the Class AA South Sectional tournament to lead SEB to an 11-0, six-inning win over Randolph-Clay.

            Barnwell also picked up the complete-game win in the second game.

            In the bottom of the ninth, Hadden started at second and moved to third on a basehit. Weaver then hit the game-winner.

            SEB plays Savannah Christian today at 2 p.m. at the Paulson Complex in Savannah. A victory puts the Lady Jackets in the Elite 8.

 

Screven beats Berrien, Pearce

 

            The Screven County Lady Gamecocks rallied for four runs in the final two innings to defeat Pearce County, 6-4, Friday and move within one victory of qualifying for the Elite 8 of the Class AA state softball tournament.

            Trailing 3-0 in the top of the fifth inning, Marla Thompson drove in two runs with a single to narrow the deficit to 3-2. But Pearce came back to score a run in the bottom of the fifth to take a 4-2 lead.

            After tieing the game with two runs in the sixth, Sydney Weaver and Carli Bess Williams each hit run scoring singles to put Screven ahead 6-4 in the seventh.

            Thompson closed down Pearce in the bottom of the seventh for the victory.

            Screven plays Berrien County today at 2 p.m. t the Paulson Complex in Savannah.A victory puts the Lady Gamecocks in the Elite 8.

            In the first game, Thompson and Kate Blackburn combined on a 1-hit shutout, as Screven defeated Fitzgerald, 12-0, in a five-inning game.

            Allison Steinhaus was the batting star with three hits and two RBI and Shay Patterson also had two RBI.
