SEB begins baseball with home tournament

The Southeast Bulloch Yellow Jackets will return to the diamond today to start off the 2007 season with a home tournament.

The Yellow Jackets will have six seniors on this year’s team – most noticeably in the outfield, where seniors Morris Turner and Jeremy Smith cover right and left field respectively. Coach Stephen Hoyle looks forward to the performance of his seniors.

“They are all good ball-players,” said Hoyle. “They have been showing a lot of leadership – pulling the team together – and I am looking for a big year out of them.”
Coming off of a six-win 2006 season, the Jackets look to improve in all aspects of their game. Hoyle took over the team in ’06, and in his second year, feels his team is coming together.
“This is my second year out there,” Hoyle said. “I feel like we had a growing and learning process last year – guys got used to me and I got used to them. I put them on some programs I felt they needed to be on. I feel like they are a whole lot stronger this year than they were last year.”
The Yellow Jackets also have an experienced team. Only having lost one senior last season, and bringing in six this year, the Jackets are a little wiser too.
The tournament that begins the ’07 season will include some good competition, with Portal, Calvary Baptist – who has won the state title twice and were runners up last year, West Laurens, Tattnall County and Claxton coming to Brooklet to compete.
Following the tournament – on Saturday – SEB will honor the 1980 Yellow Jacket team – the team that won the region for Southeast Bulloch. There will be a ceremony followed by a game featuring players from that team.
