BROOKLET - At the end of what he called one of the toughest weeks of his life as a leader, Southeast Bulloch head coach Pat Collins was thankful for the opportunity for his team to play a game and get what he called "good medicine" for the Southeast Bulloch community.
It was a week marred by serious injuries to school personnel in an auto accident. It also saw the sudden death of the mother of one of the Yellow Jackets players and ended with "a game that boys play," as Collins described it as Southeast Bulloch putting together one of their best performances of the young season to take a 35-21 win over Bryan County.
"We've had to deal with a lot of emotion this week, and when we talked to our team, we told them to channel that emotion in to playing football," Collins said.
Starting offensive lineman Colby Patton's mother passed away Monday night, which obviously affected the team as they dealt with the loss.
"We had a lot of heavy hearts for our teammate," Collins said.
On the field, Southeast Bulloch ran for more than 340 yards as the Yellow Jackets (1-2) were in control from start to finish. On their first play from scrimmage, fullback Chase Walker took the handoff up the middle and outran the Bryan County defenders for a 64-yard touchdown and a lead Southeast Bulloch would never relinquish.
Defensively, Southeast Bulloch played well in the first half, holding Bryan County (0-3) to 90 total yards and Walker added a second touchdown late in the half to give SEB a 14-0 lead going in to halftime.
Quarterback Jaylon Wells added to the Yellow Jacket lead late in the third period. After failing to find a receiver when he dropped back to pass, Wells scrambled left and then cut across the field, eluding defenders and find the end zone for a 58-yard score and a 21-0 lead.
After Bryan County responded with a touchdown of their own, Wells struck again, this time on a 3-yard run.
Bryan County again responded, this time on the next play with a 61-yard run by Dominique Mock to again cut the lead to 14.
Walker would add this third touchdown of the night with 2:29 remaining to culminate a 11-play drive aided by a critical Bryan County offside penalty on a fourth down near midfield to give the Yellow Jackets a first down and kept the drive alive.
Bryan County added one last score, but it wasn't enough as the Yellow Jackets held on for their first win.
"I thought our quarterback (Wells) was able to make things happen with his legs and made good decisions out there," Collins said. "We were also able to establish the fullback and when we can do that, we're able to get our offense going."
Collins said several players were playing new positions Friday night and thought they played well, saying those players would continue to improve as they get more experience on the field.
Walker ended the night with 202 yards to go along with his three scores. Wells added 87 yards on five carries.
"To be able to play football and be victorious on 9/11 in this country, I'm might thankful that the game came out the way we wanted it to," Collins said.
Star
Southeast Bulloch dropped its first two games, but standout running back Chase Walker did his part to get the team's fortunes turned around Friday night. On SEB's first snap, Walker galloped 64 yards for a touchdown to set the tone. The sophomore carried the ball 25 times for 202 yards and racked up three touchdowns in the Yellow Jackets' 35-14 win over Bryan County. Through three games, Walker is well ahead of last year's 1,000-yard pace.
