Bulloch Academy seniors Ashley Burke and Powell Fennell combined for five hits and drove in six runs to lead the Lady Gators to a 12-2 victory over Robert Toombs Christian Academy Thursday.
Bulloch (3-1) scored three runs in the first, four in the third, two in the fourth and three in the fifth for the run-rule win in the squad’s home opener.
“Ashley and Powell can hit the ball and we need them to do what they did today in every game,” said BA head coach Chandler Dennard. “Even though we hit the ball well and scored 12 runs, we made several errors on defense. We are inconsistent right now. If we field the ball well, we don’t hit well and vice versa. I told the girls after the game that I felt like I was on a rollercoaster.”
Sophomore pitcher Mikay Sands scattered five hits and two runs through four innings while junior Ansley Daughtry came on in the fifth. Hannah Coursey was saddled with the loss from the Lady Crusaders.
RTCA struck first in the opening inning.
Leadoff batter Emily Shaw singled, advanced to second and then to third on fielder’s choices and scored on a Lady Gator error.
BA scored three in the bottom of the inning on two hits and one RTCA error.
Senior Kristin Kingery drew a base on balls and took second on Burke’s first single of the game. She advanced to third when fellow senior Page Spence was hit by a pitch.             Freshman Alivia Collins blasted a line drive to short. RTCA’s Jada Thompson made the catch and threw to third to double-up Kingery. But the throw went into the RTCA dugout and Kingery was awarded home.
Fennell then blasted a triple to the right-field fence to score Burke and Spence.
After the Lady Crusaders added a run in the top of the third, nine BA batters scored four runs on four hits in the bottom of the frame for a 7-2 lead.
In the inning, Fennell and junior Kaleigh Sisolak had RBI doubles, junior Hannah Dasher ripped a run-scoring single, junior Kendra Houghton had an infield single and both Burke and Sands walked. Another BA run scored on an RTCA miscue.
After Sands set down the side in the top of the fourth, Bulloch touched RTCA relief pitcher Bailey Mixon for two runs on two hits in the bottom of the inning for a 9-2 lead.
The Lady Gators only had one hit in the bottom of the fifth, but it was a bases-loaded triple by Burke to end the game.
