Prep roundup: SEB baseball edges past Swainsboro

    BROOKLET — Southeast Bulloch High School's baseball team beat Swainsboro, 5-4, on Tuesday.
    SEB's J.D. Smith earned the win, striking out eight. Tyler Brown, Aaron Rowe, Zach Hall, Seth Morgan and Eli Page each had RBIs for the Yellow Jackets (10-8).

SEB girls soccer beats Jefferson Co.
    Southeast Bulloch High School's girls soccer team beat Jefferson County, 5-0, on Tuesday at Mill Creek Park.
    SEB (7-3-1 overall, 7-2 in Region 3-AA) was led by Netanya Suarez, who scored four goals. Merekate Schlierf also scored.
    Schlierf and Morgan Friend each had two assists, and Suarez had an assist. Goalkeeper Alexxus Hammonds had one save and Rheann Davis made three saves.

Statesboro baseball beats Effingham Co.
    SPRINGFIELD — Statesboro High School's baseball team beat Effingham County, 4-3, on Tuesday.
    The Blue Devils (10-9 overall, 4-5 in Region 2B-AAAA) were led by pitcher Wil Stuart, who earned the win. Colin Chance registered the save.
    Top hitters for SHS were Justin Mee and Ben Roberts.
   
BA boys soccer falls in OT at Augusta
    AUGUSTA — Augusta Prep beat Bulloch Academy, 2-1, in overtime of a boys soccer game Tuesday.
    Chase Merrill scored for Bulloch Academy (5-6 overall, 1-4 in GISA Region 1-AA). John Paul Padilla assisted.
    "Mitchell Smith, our goalkeeper, played a great game," BA coach Art Franklin said. "He had at least 10 saves."

Screven Co. girls beat SCD at tennis
    SYLVANIA — Screven County High School's girls tennis team defeated Savannah Country Day, 4-1, on Tuesday and Screven's boys lost, 5-0, to SCD.
    The Lady Gamecocks (16-1) got wins from Lovey Sheppard, 6-1, 6-2; Mallorie Boswell, 6-0, 6-1; Haley Mock and Jancy Durrence, 6-2, 6-0; and Pam Wooten and Kari Lane, 6-1, 6-2.
    Screven's boys fell to 7-10.
    Screven's girls and boys will play Southeast Bulloch at 4 p.m. Thursday in Brooklet.

Screven baseball beats Jefferson Co.
    SYLVANIA — Screven County High School's baseball team defeated Jefferson County, 4-2, on Tuesday.
    Kameron Oliver earned the win for the Gamecocks (7-11 overall, 5-1 in Region 3AA-A), striking out nine, walking two and allowing an earned run on three hits in 5 1/3 innings. Aaron Browner struck out five in 1 2/3 innings to earn the save.
    Blake Evans had three hits and three RBIs for the Gamecocks. Hobby Mills had two hits, including a triple, and an RBI. Patrick Scarboro reached base three times and scored twice.
   
Screven girls soccer crushes Cross Creek
    SYLVANIA — Screven County High School's girls soccer team crushed Cross Creek, 10-0, on Tuesday.
    The Lady Gamecocks (10-3) were led by Hannah Jones, who scored three goals. Kayla Chance and Jennifer Suggs scored two goals apiece. Jewel Melvin, Dana Kemp and Jessica Markovcic each scored a goal.

SBCPRD to host baseball event
    The Statesboro Bulloch County Parks and Recreation Department (SBCPRD) will host a free Aquafina Major League Baseball Pitch Hit and Run Competition on April 18-19 from 5-8 p.m. at Mill Creek Park Field 6.
    Competitors are divided into four age groups: 7-8-year-olds, 9-10 yr. olds, 11-12 yr. olds, and 13-14 yr. olds. Competitors must bring a copy of their birth certificate and fill out a registration form/waiver prior to the start of the competition.
    Pitch, Hit and Run is the Official Skills Competition of Major League Baseball.

SHS girls soccer defeats Grovetown
    Statesboro High School's girls soccer team beat Grovetown, 8-0, on Monday.
    The Lady Blue Devils (8-3 overall, 6-3 in Region 2B-AAAA)  got two goals apiece from Tori Thompson, Reagan Thomas, Chelsea Wilson and Sarah Brown.
    Goalkeeper Destiny Lanier registered the shutout.

SEB boys soccer beats Jefferson Co.
    Senior striker James Jones scored four goals to lead Southeast Bulloch to a 5-1 victory over Jefferson County on Tuesday in boys soccer at Mill Creek Park.
    The Yellow Jackets improved to 7-3-1 overall and 6-1 in Region 3-AA play. SEB faces East Laurens at 7 p.m. Thursday at Mill Creek Park in a region game.
    Jones scored his first goal about 10 minutes into the game, converting a right-footed shot off a through ball from junior midfielder Sean Healy. Jones added two more goals before halftime to give SEB a 3-0 lead. He put the Yellow Jackets up 4-0 early in the second half and senior Jimmy Howell made it 5-0 with about 20 minutes to play off an assist by senior stopper Cam Duncan.
Jones has scored eight goals in the last three games and now has 10 for the season.
