Local Roundup: LCMS takes down South Effingham

    GUYTON — Langston Chapel Middle School shook off a disappointing 2013 season with a convincing, season-opening  38-16 win at South Effingham on Wednesday.
    Craig Jones led the scoring with three rushing touchdown, and Jamie Rich and Shaun Hill each added a score on the ground.
    Darnell Owens earned a pair of points for a safety when he sacked the SEMS quarterback in the end zone, and Tylon Evans intercepted a Mustangs pass.

SBCPRD holding softball tryouts
    The Statesboro Bulloch County Parks and Recreation Department will host tryouts for the Around the Horn Softball Team on Sunday, September 14 at 3 pm on Mill Creek Park Field 3.
     Around the Horn softball is for 11- to 14-year-old girls who have experience playing softball and are prepared to train for a highly competitive league.
     The Around the Horn softball team will be a travel team that will travel regionally to compete, but will rarely have overnight stays.
     The team will practice on Sundays and possibly one weekday during the October through June season.
     There is no cost to tryout. After tryouts, selected players will receive information on practices, tournaments and league costs.

Fogle joins GSU softball staff
    Georgia Southern softball head coach Annie Smith has named Marie Fogle as Assistant Coach for the 2015 season.
    A three-time All-SoCon honoree, Fogle helped lead the Eagles to a league championship in 2012 and a trip to NCAA Tournament.
    As a player, Fogle completed her career as one of the best hitters in program history recording .345 career batting average which ranks as the third-best average in school history. She is the school record holder with a .553 career slugging percentage and has 27 home runs to her name.

GSU women set for home opener
    Georgia Southern women’s soccer returns home for the first time in 2014 on Friday to face Mercer in the home opener for the Eagles.
    The game against the Bears starts at 7 p.m.
    It is Alumni Weekend with former Eagles returning to Eagle Field where admission is free.
