Local Roundup: Blue Devils win golf tournament

    The Statesboro Blue Devils won a boys golf tournament at Forest Heights Country Club with a team score of 171 on Thursday.
    Also participating were Burke County (176), Southeast Bulloch (197) and Portal (214).
    Statesboro's Clay Cribbs shot a 37 to lead SHS and win low medalist for the round.
    Jordan Woody (43), Trevor Dailey (45) and T.J. Costlow (46) rounded out the scoring for the Blue Devils.
    The Lady Blue Devils shot a 144 and placed second behind Burke County (139).
    Portal finished with 163 and Southeast Bulloch shot 177.
    Sara Jane Bowers shot a team-low 38 for Statesboro, Brianna Jones shot 48 and Emily Olsson shot 58.
    Faith Reddick shot a 50 for Portal, and Caitlyn Girardeau shot 52.
    The Portal boys were paced by Jordan Aubrey and Jordan McCullough.
    Statesboro will be back at Forest Heights for another  tournament on Tuesday.

Yellow Jackets sweep Savannah
    BROOKELT — The Southeast Bulloch Yellow Jackets played a doubleheader against region rival Savannah High on Thursday winning 16-1 and 20-0.
    The Jackets improved to 7-4, and 6-1 in Region 1-AAA.

GSU swept at Mercer
    MACON — Georgia Southern Softball dropped a midweek doubleheader to the Mercer Bears on Thursday afternoon by 4-3 and 11-3 margins.
    Mercer blasted six home runs on the day including three in game two from Caroline Taylor.
    Georgia Southern was buoyed by a 3-for-6 aggregate performance by Kourtny Thomas, that included her 10th home run of the season.
    The Eagles return to league play this weekend with a three-game set against Elon.

UMass knocks off Eagles
    CHARLESTON, S.C. — Georgia Southern women’s tennis was defeated by Massachusetts, 6-1, on Thursday afternoon at LTP Tennis Center in Charleston, S.C.
    The Eagles’ record drops to 6-9. They return to action on their home courts on Saturday at noon in Southern Conference play against Davidson.
