Local Roundup: BAs Lanier takes state runner-up

    MACON — Cody Lanier, a junior at Bulloch Academy, was the state runner-up in the GISA Class AAA boys’ singles tennis tournament last weekend.
    Lanier easily won his first two matches on Thursday at the John Drew Smith Tennis Center. He beat Kyle Crew from Southland Academy 6-2, 6-2 then turned around and whipped Sarin Khurana from Stratford Academy 6-0, 6-1 to advance to the Final Four.
On Friday, he defeated Christopher Truong from The Heritage School 6-3, 6-0 in the semifinal match. In the championship match, Hamza Khan of The Heritage School beat Lanier 7-6 in a tiebreaker in the first set but then took the second set 6-0.
During the regular season, Lanier went undefeated at the number one boys’ singles spot and won the Region 4-AAA boys’ singles championship.

Walker earns monthly honor
    SPARTANBURG, S.C. —Georgia Southern junior Jasmin Walker, who was named the Most Outstanding Athlete and Most Outstanding Track Athlete at the Southern Conference Championships, was selected the Women’s Outdoor Track Athlete of the Month by the league office today.
    She collected six awards at last month’s league championships and is expected to compete with her SoCon champion 4x100-meter Relay teammates at the NCAA Division I East Region later this month.
    Walker won her third-straight outdoor Long Jump title, extending the Georgia Southern skein to 10 titles in the outdoor event, and was a member of the Eagles’ 4X100m Relay that ran a 44.50 time for a Southern Conference and University record.

Former Eagle Roache hits 3 HRs
    Former Georgia Southern baseball single-season home run leader Victor Roache set a Brevard County Manatees' record with a three home run game on Sunday.
    Roache hit two solo home runs through the first four innings and capped the day with a two-run homer off of Steven Inch in the fifth inning. He was intentionally walked in his final at-bat of the day.

SBCPRD youth baseball scores
    The Statesboro-Bulloch County Parks and Recreation Department held several youth baseball games on Monday.
    In the Midget Boys league, the D & R Car Care Padres beat the Moe’s Southwest Grill Nationals 10-0, the OneMain Financial Cubs won their game against the Mezco Financial Pirates 9-2 and the Pawn City Tigers beat the Statesboro Floor Covering Giants 9-2.

GSU volleyball signs Murray
    Georgia Southern volleyball coach Dustin Wood announced Tuesday that Cathrine Murray (San Diego, Calif./Clairemont) has signed a National Letter of Intent to play for the Eagles, beginning in the 2014 season.
