Competing in the Class-AAAA sectionals at Grovetown High School this past weekend, the Statesboro track and field team showed up in top form. The Blue Devils received solid performances from both their boys and girls squads and will send a total of 14 individuals to the state meets.
As has been the case all season, the Lady Devils dominated in their track events. Keiyonna Gusby (300 meter hurdles), Teisha Murray (400 meters), Mahagony Lanier (100 meters), Anesha Drummer (100 meter hurdles) and Shanice Walker (100 meter hurdles, 300 meter hurdles) all qualified for the state meet in their individual events.
In the field events, Statesboro senior Alisia Jenkins set a pair of new school records. Her long jump of 19-feet, 5-inches and her triple jump of 38-feet, 3.5-inches, both set new school marks and earned her a trip to state.
Both the 4x100 meter relay team (Lanier, Walker, Jenkins, Heather Wasdin) and the 4x400 squad (Jenkins, Murray, Wasdin, Genevieve Okafor) also qualified for state.
On the boys side, Zaquavian Smith (high jump, 400 meters), Andreas Ward (110 meter hurdles), and Courtney Reese (300 meter hurdles) qualified in individual events, with the 4x100 meter relay team of Smith, Devin Budgett, Michael Summers and Quan Daniels also notching a spot at state.
The girls’ state meet will be contested May 3-5 in Albany. The boys will hold their state meet May 10-12 in Jefferson.
