Lady Jackets prevail, but Claxton boys top SEB
Claxton W

The Southeast Bulloch girls only had three players score in Saturday nights game against Claxton, but those three proved to be enough as they notched their second win of the season beating the Tigers 41-34.

The game started out going back and forth with the Tigers (4-10) clinging to a 12-11 lead after one quarter of play.

In the second quarter the Yellow Jackets (2-6) applied some defensive pressure resulting in Tiger turnovers, and they jumped out to a 22-16 halftime lead.

“We were able to get into our press a lot in the second quarter,” said Southeast Bulloch coach Kristen Barnhill. “We haven’t been able to get into that much this year because the teams we play in the region have such good ball handlers.”

In the third the Yellow Jackets extended their lead to 29-20, but the Tigers made it interesting in the fourth.

With just under three minutes to go in the game the Tigers cut the lead to 35-31, but the Jackets responded with back to back layups by Krystyn Turner (17 points) and Aaliyah Sandifer (14 points) to take a 39-30 lead with 1:48 to go.

“Claxton didn’t quit and got close late in the game, give them credit,” Barnhill said. “But our girls answered when we had to.  I think that shows the progress on our young team that will serve us well as we get back into region play.”

Camryn Batton was the only other Yellow Jacket player to score as she had 10 points.  Claxton was led by Talaya Robinson with 8 points.

It’s an unfortunate trend lately for the Southeast Bulloch boys basketball team. The Jackets take an early lead, have the game within reach in the second half, but allow their opponent to go on a run and end up losing. That happened again Saturday against Claxton, and resulted in a 68-53 loss.

“We really need a couple more big men to be able to bang inside,” said Southeast Bulloch coach John Page. “When our opponents go in the paint to their big men we are at a disadvantage, and that happened again here tonight.”

Southeast Bulloch (0-13)  opened the game on an 8-2 run on three pointers by Ryan Swanson and Tyler Bailey, and a Bryce Stephens layup.  Swanson added a three pointer at the buzzer to give the Jackets a 16-9 lead at the end of the first quarter.

In the second Claxton (9-5) opened on a 7-0 run, but Tyler Bailey hit a three to make it 19-16 with 5:32 left in the quarter.  Russell Williams three pointer gave the Jackets a 24-19 lead with 3:05 left in the half, but the Tigers close the half on a 12-2 run to grab a 31-26 halftime lead.

In the third quarter the Tigers open up on a 6-0 run, but the Jackets got a three pointer from Swanson, and a three point play by Tyler Bailey to cut the lead to five at 37-32 with 4:05 left in the quarter.

Claxton would go on a 20-9 run the next six minutes to extend their lead to 57-41.  Southeast made a late run but would wind up falling by 15 points.

“I feel like we are close,” Page said.  “We are playing really well at times, but we can’t keep it going consistently.  I’m proud of the way we started the game, and that is something we need to build on.”

Swanson led the way for the Yellow Jackets with 22 points, Bailey added 13.  The Tigers were led by Shy’rik Furman with 22 points, Hoston Robinson had 14 points.

Up next, Southeast Bulloch hosts Groves Tuesday with the girls getting things underway at 6 p.m.
