Gators sweep past Hilton Head Prep
BAcolor

Tyler Budgett pumped in 23 points and Jarius Mikell added 14 to lead Bulloch Academy to a 74-46 drubbing of Hilton Head Prep Tuesday night.
Bulloch (2-0) raced out to a 22-12 lead after the first quarter. The senior pounded four three-pointers in the span, the last one giving the Gators a 22-8 lead with 1:04 left in the quarter.
BA’s defense netted the Dolphins in the second quarter as Budgett and fellow seniors Mikell, Lanier Olliff, Hunter Perry and Brian Harrison built a wall at the time line early on. Turnovers led to a 10-0 run and Olliff’s steal and layup with 6:10 remaining gave the Gators a 32-12 lead.
Perry turned up the heat in the middle, scoring six of his nine, and making the going rough for the smaller HHP players. Bulloch took a 48-24 halftime lead.
In the third, BA went on a 12-6 run to up the score to 60-30 when Budgett knocked down three foul shots at the 1:48 mark.
The mercy rule, a six-minute quarter instead of eight minutes, was invoked in the final period and BA head coach Chandler Dennard substituted freely.
Ian Plumlee led Hilton Head (0-1) with nine points and Bryan Allen added eight.

Lady Gators 50,  Lady Dolphins 35
The Lady Gators also had a 22-point first quarter in their rout over the Lady Dolphins.
HHP had no answer for BA center Mikay Sands, who had a game-high 21 points. The sophomore towered over the smaller opponents, dominating both ends of the court. She scored 11 in the opening eight minutes. The visitors also had no answer for the aggressive and quick man trap, led by sophomore Mattie Wynn Hendrix and eighth graders Lacy Robins and Abby Newton, off the inbounds pass.
Senior Sarah Evans added five of her nine points in the quarter and Robins had four of her nine.
BA head coach Paul Webb subbed early and often. Still, the Bulloch girls (3-1) took a 20-point lead, 27-7, when freshman Bryan Boykin pushed up a putback with 6:12 left. Webb put Sands in the fore court of the trap as Bulloch went up by 29.
But HHP’s Catherine Sheehan drilled three three-pointers in the quarter to keep the mercy rule at bay. BA took a 37-16 halftime lead. Sheehan led the Lady Dolphins (0-1) with 20 points.
Webb substituted freely in the second half.
Both Bulloch teams travel to Albany Friday to take on Deerfield-Windsor.
