The Statesboro High School boys soccer team notched a convincing win Tuesday night, rolling to a 4-0 victory over Toombs County with a clean game that was never in doubt.
Hector Angeles scored midway through the first half, Alan Rodriguez added a hat trick in the second half, and the Blue Devils played solid defense throughout to top the Bulldogs.
Early in the game, the teams stayed even on the scoreboard, but it was clear that Statesboro was the team dictating the pace. The Devils had solid possessions and a few looks at crossing passes or long shots. Meanwhile, the Bulldogs were held to quick possessions that often saw them race backwards after Statesboro forced a turnover and went on the counter-attack.
Manning the back line for the Devils, Cody Francis, George Hill and Matthew Sameratedu set the tone early. The Statesboro defense took care of almost every challenge as sophomore goalkeeper Drew Funk faced just two shots on net throughout the entire game.
“We really played solidly all day,” SHS coach Nick Thrower said. “Early on, we made some good challenges and won some crucial balls. That took away some scoring chances for (Toombs).
“You always want to start from the goal and back line and then move forward from there. That’s how we can be effective.”
With the defense firing on all cylinders, the Devils' offense dominated the last 60 minutes of action.
Statesboro got on the board at the 24:45 mark of the first half off of a throw in. The ball initially missed its mark, but after bounding over several Bulldog defenders, it finally settled at Angeles’ feet and he tucked it into the right side of the net for the game’s first goal.
Statesboro took its 1-0 lead into halftime and continued to control the ball as the second half began.
Nearly every Blue Devils possession found its way inside the Toombs County 18-yard box and, while SHS missed several goal-scoring opportunities early in the half, the Bulldogs’ inability to get off of defense started to wear them down.
“Toombs was playing a very defensive strategy,” Thrower said. “Once we realized that and were able to possess the ball, it allowed us to create a lot of chances.”
With just under 29 minutes to play, Rodriguez doubled the Devils' advantage.
Toombs County did a good job of heading a corner kick away from its net, but the ball sailed straight to the right foot of Rodriguez, who blasted it past Bulldogs goalkeeper Modesto Delgado for a 2-0 lead.
With Toombs County reeling, Rodriguez notched another goal with just over 10 minutes to play. A third shot off of his foot found the net with 3:43 to go, giving him a hat trick and putting the game well out of reach.
“It was great to see Alan get those goals,” Thrower said. “I know it wasn’t Senior Night, but this was our seniors’ last regular-season home game. It was great for Alan to get a few goals tonight.”
With the win, the Devils climbed to 6-8 on the season while remaining in the No. 4 slot in their sub-region. The Devils take on Greenbrier at 7 p.m. Friday and, regardless of the outcome, will be on the road for a region play-in game that can earn them a seed in the state playoffs next Tuesday.
