With ten players from last season’s region championship team departed, this figured to be a rebuilding year for Claxton.
Thanks to the efforts of players like junior guard Kelsey Wilkerson, the Tigers are right back atop the Region 3-A standings in the final days of regular season play.
Last Saturday, Wilkerson tied teammate LeBron Glover with 17 points to lead all other scorers in Claxton’s cross-region win against rival Portal.
A member of the junior varsity squad last season, Wilkerson has seized the opportunity given to him and has been a valuable asset to the Tigers on a nightly basis.
“I worked hard all summer on my AAU team,” said Wilkerson. “I’m happy to have the chance to help on the varsity team this year.
Claxton is sitting in a first place tie with Calvary Day in the East sub-region and has already clinched a first-round bye in the region tournament.
“I think that last year’s success is good motivation for everyone that is new,” said Wilkerson. “We aren’t getting ahead of ourselves though. We just want to focus on winning each game as it comes.”
