Athlete of the Week: Humphries helps BA advance

Jarret Humphries, Bulloch Academy baseball player.

When Jarret Humphries took the mound for Bulloch Academy on Tuesday, he wasn’t just trying to save a game, he was trying to save a season.
A rough couple of weeks had seen the Gators fall to the brink of playoff elimination, and they were faced with a must-win situation in their final region game against Augusta Prep. To make matters worse, the game was already partially complete, having been postponed by weather in the fifth inning a month earlier, and the Gators faced a 1-0 deficit and a bases-loaded jam.
But Humphries came to the rescue. The junior worked out of trouble, allowing one run out of the tough situation, and watched as his teammates rallied to win, 7-2.
“I just tried to treat it like any other game,” Humphries said of the unique circumstance. “I did my best to throw strikes and get outs, and the rest of my teammates came through and played great.”
After escaping the postponed fifth inning and being given a lead, Humphries cruised through the final two innings for the win.
Next Friday, the Gators travel for a best-of-three series in the GISA state playoffs.
