Screven County’s girls basketball team used a dominating stretch of basketball to secure a 56-30 home win over Josey on Saturday.
The Lady Gamecocks trailed 16-6 with four seconds remaining in the first period before Symphony White hit a two at the buzzer to ignite the team.
Josey (10-9, 5-4) was held scoreless in the second period and SCHS made the first four baskets of the third, a 23-0 run that broke the game open.
White led Screven (16-3, 7-2 Region 3-AA) with 19 points, while Kadedra Evans added 14.
Portal boys dominate
Portal’s boys basketball team more than doubled Claxton on Saturday, cruising to a 72-34 home victory.
Fred Williams’ 22 points led the Panthers (14-4, 6-2). Mario Farris added 17.
For Claxton, Damion Brewton had 13 and Chris Bellamy scored 12.
Lady Tigers win, 44-41
Claxton’s girls basketball team topped Portal Saturday, 44-41.
The Lady Tigers (7-11, 3-4) got the road win thanks in part to Lacreasha Brewton’s 21 points and double-double of Endya Jones (15 points, 14 rebounds).
Portal falls to 3-15, 2-6 in region play.
SEB ROTC impresses
Southeast Bulloch High School put on a great showing at a 14-school drill meet held at Savannah’s Benedictine High School.
SEB took first place in the following competitions: male mixed armed squad, male mixed unarmed squad, male mixed unarmed platoon competition, armed knockout drill and unarmed knockout drill.
Chad Oglesby and Alex Stout earned first place individual honors in the armed and unarmed knockout drill categories, respectively.
The Yellow Jackets also did well in the following events: Female color guard (second), male mixed armed platoon (third) and male mixed color guard (third).
SEB’s next meet takes place Saturday at Ware County High.

Southeast Bulloch won a junior varsity boys basketball game Saturday, downing Metter 42-24 at home.
Derek Dobson led SEB (4-4) with 13 points; Sam Dickerson added nine.
BA’s B-team splits
The girls’ B-basketball team of Pinewood downed the Lady Gators 31-11. Sara Spates had a game-high 11 points while Alex Pedrick added nine. For Bulloch, Mary Catherine Spigener led with five while Rachel Gilbert had four.
The Bulloch B-team boys were the only victors of the day, taking a 33-23 win. Taylor Burke netted eight points for the Gators while Jonathan Williamson had eight. Justin Dopple led PCA with eight.
The Gator varsity squads and B-team boys travel to Savannah Tuesday to battle Memorial Day School.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The Georgia Southern women’s tennis team dropped their first competition of the season 5-2 at North Florida in a hard-fought match versus the Ospreys.
In singles competition, the Eagles took victories at the No. 2 and No. 5 spots with Kegerreis and Shea Huxtable defeating their opponents.
Kegerreis won at the No. 2 slot, 6-3, 6-1 and Huxtable came from behind to win 0-6, 6-2, 6-2.
“This was a really well-fought match for us,” said assistant coach Kim Wollett. “We’re really proud of Shea for coming back after being down a set and the doubles point was extremely tight. Hopefully we can learn from this loss and build on some things for our next match.”
