Former Georgia Southern star and Walter Payton Award winner Jayson Foster was waived Saturday night by the Miami Dolphins. Foster signed with the Dolphins as a free agent in April and had hoped to make the team as a receiver and/or special teams player.

Foster, who set an NCAA record for most rushing yards as a quarterback last season with Georgia Southern, played in all four Dolphins exhibition games, but didn’t catch any passes and was never able to break any punt returns.

Playing in Jacksonville two weeks ago, Foster said he understood the business side of the NFL and knew he was a long shot to make the team. Foster could be picked up by another NFL team prior to the start of the season next week, but there was no word late Saturday night.
