Versatile.
That may be the best way to describe the play of Screven County forward Dajuwan Carter.
The 6-foot-4 senior has developed his game over the last four seasons to become not only a presence under the basket, but a threat from outside as well.
“When we play the bigger teams, they usually don’t like to go out to the 3-point line (to guard Carter),” said Screven coach Arthur Davis. “(Carter) can knock down the 3-point shot, so it’s a bit of a disadvantage for them.”
Carter cracked the starting lineup as a sophomore, and hard work at improving his ball handling and shot has paid off. Carter is just 88 points away from reaching the 1,000 point mark. He’ll be just the fifth player in school history to do so.
“I thought he had the potential,” said Davis, looking back on Carter as an underclassmen. “I felt he had the tools, and that with hard work that is was possible for him to reach that milestone.”
Carter entered his senior campaign with 654 points. In 19 games, he’s averaged 14.1 points a game. Carter’s hitting 37.1 percent of his 3s and 57.9 percent from inside the arc. He also leads the team with 6.1 rebounds per contest.
Carter and the Gamecocks continue Region 3-AA play Friday when they host Swainsboro at 8:30 p.m.
Girls: Mikell a young leader at SEB
The Southeast Bulloch Lady Yellow Jackets look to have a bright future ahead of them.
With the emergence of freshman point guard Crystal Mikell as a scoring threat and a leader, the Jackets — who have been struggling in the recent years — have begun to turn it around.
Mikell started the 2007-08 season coming off the bench for the Lady Jackets, but in a short time has earned herself a spot with the starting five.
“She steps up,” said Southeast Bulloch coach Mark Smith. “She’s really a scoring threat. She gives us somebody out there on the floor that other teams have to deal with, especially when she has the ball in her hands.”
The young team has had to look to Mikell and fellow freshman guard Olivia Melvin to handle the ball, and Smith feels the early playing time is invaluable.
“The good thing is,” said Smith, “they’re getting used to being in (difficult) situations. Eventually it’s going to pay off.”
Mikell racked up 13 points in Tuesdays non-region game against Jenkins County and snagged three steals.
Mikell and the Yellow Jackets return to action on Friday when the hit the road for a rematch against Josey, one of the top teams in Region 3-AA.
