CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – The Georgia Southern women’s basketball team produced a late second-half rally to close the gap to 10 points, but Chattanooga held off the Lady Eagle effort, winning its third consecutive game, 78-63, Monday night at Chattanooga’s McKenzie Arena.
With the loss, Georgia Southern (7-13, 2-7) drops its sixth straight contest, tying a school record.
The Lady Mocs (14-6, 7-2) improve their win streak to three games.
Five Lady Mocs scored in double figures, including SoCon scoring leader Alex Anderson, who netted a game-high 17 points, shooting 6 of 8 from the field and 5 of 6 from the free-throw line.
Freshman guard Carolyn Whitney paced GSU with 16 points, dishing out four assists and tallying four rebounds and two steals. Whitney hit 6 of 15 from the field, including four triples. Junior guard Tiffany Brown followed with 15 points, making 7 of 16 attempts from the field.
BA JV wrestlers take second place
MONTICELLO – Bulloch Academy’s junior varsity wrestling team took second place in a multi-team tournament Saturday.
Tyler Thompson, wrestling in the heavyweight division, defeated all comers to win the class while Codi Johnson won the 140-pound division.
The Gator JV also picked up a second-place finish, two thirds and two fourths. Spencer Brannen was runner-up in the 133-pound class. Stephen Rushing (133-pound) and Blaine Lovett (90-pound) had third-place finishes. Harrison Averitt (90-pound) and Daniel Muldrew (103-pound) had fourth-place efforts.
Bulloch’s varsity squad, hampered by sickness and injury, came in fifth with only five wrestlers.
Eli Strickland came in third in the 152-pound division while Michael DeLoach was third in the 160-pound class and Michael Kimbrell took fourth in the 140-pound division.
Bulloch hosts a quad varsity meet with David Emanuel, Robert Toombs and Trinity Christian today starting at 6 p.m. The Gators will compete in region this Saturday at Southland Academy in Americus.
CofC 77, Wofford 75
CHARLESTON, S.C. — Phillip McCandies’ only 3-pointer of the night won the game with a second to go as the College of Charleston beat Wofford 77-75 on Monday night.
The Terriers (6-14, 1-8 Southern Conference) had just taken the lead on a 3-pointer by Junior Salters with 10 seconds left.
Wofford led by as many as 18 in the first half before the Cougars (14-7, 7-2) went on a 33-13 run spanning halftime to take a 50-48 lead with 13 minutes left in the game on Dontaye Draper’s 3-pointer.
The Terriers expanded the lead back to eight points with just under seven minutes to go, but Wofford only scored one basket in the next four minutes.
Salters led the Terriers with 16 points, while Tyler Whatley added 14 points and nine rebounds.
Draper and Jermaine Johnson each scored 22 points to lead Charleston, while McCandies added 13 points.
