GREENSBORO, N.C. — The UNC Greensboro Spartans scrapped to a 7-6, 10-inning win Saturday in Game 2 to take the three-game series against Georgia Southern Saturday, and this time they earned all of their runs.
The Eagles issued five walks and four hit-batsmen, and led on three separate occasions before letting it slip away in extra innings.
"We’ve got to pitch better," said GSU coach Rodney Hennon. "We’re killing ourselves with walks. You can’t walk as many guys as we’re walking right now and expect to win. That’s killed us in the first two ballgames, and we’ve got to do a better job."
Georgia Southern (25-18, 13-7 Southern Conference) used five different pitchers, and Matt Murray (4-2) gave up a walkoff, RBI double to UNCG’s Bobby Martin that drove in leadoff hitter John Hein (1-for-2, 3 R, BB, HBP, 2 SAC) after Hein drew a two-out walk.
The Eagles got something going in the top of the 10th when Eric Phillips beat out an infield single with a head-first slide, but he was doubled up at first after Victor Roache popped out to right centerfield.
"You’ve got to make plays when they count," said Hennon. "They did, we didn’t. We’ve just got to pick ourselves up and come out Sunday ready to scrap."
Greensboro (24-17, 13-7) trailed the Eagles on three separate occasions, twice after Victor Roache home runs in the third and fourth innings, but answered each time scoring three in the bottom of the fourth off of GSU starter Andy Moye (3 IP, 4 H, 4 ER, 3 K) and two more off relief pitcher Will Middour.
Roache has hit 22 homers this season and continues to lead Division I.
For the second-straight game, the Eagles lost when out hitting their opponent racking up 12 hits to UNCG’s 10.
The teams combined for 24 stranded runners, with 14 belonging to the Eagles. Of GSU’s 14 stranded runners, 10 were left in scoring position.
Two of GSU’s runs resulted from two UNCG errors. Michael Burruss scored after reaching on an error in the top of the first — on a bases-loaded walk by Tom Richardson — and Richardson scored in the fifth on a throwing error by Spartans’ relief pitcher Jonathan Jones.
Jarett Miller (4-2), the Spartans’ closer, got the win, pitching the final two innings and allowing only one walk and the hit to Phillips.
The Eagles will try to salvage Game 3 today at 1 p.m.
Joe Lower (0-0, 3.81 ERA) will get his first-career start. The freshman has appeared in 14 games and has 18 strikeouts in 28.1 innings of work.
