Adres Castillo’s header from a Joe Hastings cross in the 35th minute was all visiting Lakeside needed Monday, defeating Statesboro 1-0.
After Castillo’s winner, there wasn’t much the Blue Devils (3-6-0, 0-4-0 Region 3-AAAA) could muster offensively.
“We had a disappointing first half,” said SHS coach Chad Prosser. “(Lakeside) came out and dominated play and we were lucky it wasn’t worse than 1-0. That was our opportunity. We knew that (Lakeside) was a second half team. We just came out flat and played really poorly in the first half.”
Statesboro’s best chance to put home an equalizer came just nine minutes after halftime. Matt Conner struck a free kick off the post and the rebound found a charging Michael Campbell - but the senior chipped it just over the bar.
The Blue Devils then had back-to-back corners in the 77th and 78th minutes, but both attempts were cleared by a stellar LHS defense.
“I think our attackers played well in the second half,” said Prosser. “We only had a couple (of opportunities) and in soccer you don’t get a lot - you got to make those count.”
Thirty minutes into the match, David Ball bent a ball into the box, but Panthers keeper Michael Combs punched it out of play. The ensuing corner was cleared momentarily, but Ball sent another ball into the box only to see it headed a foot too high by Lindsey Martin.
Five minutes later, Hastings broke free down the right side of the field and sent the ball to Castillo who headed it into the back corner of the net.
Statesboro will take a break from region play, hosting Southeast Bulloch today at Mill Creek at 5 p.m. The game will be played on the Main Street side of the park.
Lady Panthers 7, Lady Blue Devils 0
The Lady Panthers of Lakeside beat Statesboro 7-0 Monday. Six different players scored in a match totally controlled by LHS (6-3-1) and the Lady Panthers registered 25 shots on goal.
Statesboro appeared to be weathering the storm in the early going until the 24th minute. Mary Penn finished a pass from Elizabeth Pugh and the flood gates seemed to open from there. Theresa Bailey stepped out and laced a line drive into the bottom corner of the net five minutes later and then Lindsey Williams bent one in the 38th to make it 3-0 before half.
Keeper Whitney Lucas made 17 saves for SHS (0-7-2, 0-4 Region 3-AAAA) before being pulled and put back in to play defense in the second half.
Williams scored once more in the 43rd minute, then Pugh found Megan Wray to make it 5-0 in the 51st. In the 60th, Pugh notched her third assist of the match, finding Chelsea Bates to make it 6-0. Brianna McLeod turned and fired in the 76th minute to provide the final margin.
The Lady Devils failed to get a shot on goal, but defenseman Ukachi Ugorgi took the ball coast-to-coast in the 69th minute to give SHS its lone scoring opportunity.
Statesboro’s game with Southeast Bulloch scheduled for today has been canceled. The Lady Devils will face the Academy of Richmond County on Thursday at 5:30 p.m.
