Statesboro scored eight runs in the bottom half of the first and cruised to a 13-2, five-inning win over visiting Vidalia Monday at Mill Creek on Senior Night. The Blue Devils scored all their runs on just seven hits.
“Anytime we win we want to win, we definitely don’t want to lose,” said SHS Chris Bishop. “But it was most important to get kids at-bats — get these seniors out on a winning note and just practice some things.”
The Diamond Devils (12-8) tallied eight in the first on four hits, three walks, three hit batsmen, two stolen bases, two wild pitches and three Indian pitchers.
Senior Taylor Lewis was hit by a pitch three separate times, walked and singled in four plate appearances.
“I’m used to getting hit, I’ve been hit lots of times,” said Lewis, who was honored with four other seniors after the game. He took a moment after the game to reflect on Senior Night. “This might be the last time — hypothetically — this could be our last home game together. It was good to come out and get a run-rule win.”
The contest was called after Luke Connell got three outs in the top if the fifth to hold SHS an 11 run advantage after five. Statesboro’s five in the bottom of the third proved to be the difference.
“It was good, it was exciting,” said senior second baseman Daniel Whitt. “We all got out and had a good time. There was no pressure, we just went out and got the job done.”
Tony Hill started for SHS, allowing two runs (one earned) in two innings and struggled with his control. Josh Ware pitched two innings in relief, walking one and striking out two on 22 pitches.
Vidalia (8-14) was led by Michael Madison who doubled home a run in the first. Starter Jarod Peacock faced eight batters, surrendered seven earned runs and didn’t get an out.
Grayson Wiggins (2-for-4, two RBI), Forrest Robertson (1-for-2, 2 RBI) and Trent Lewis (1-for-2, 2 runs scored) were also honored after the game.
Statesboro will travel to Brunswick on Friday to face the Pirates in the first round of the Region 3-AAAA tournament in a best-of-three series. If the teams split, they’ll play a third game Saturday.
