BA enjoys a little Spring football

Bulloch Academy sophomore David Poole had a big smile on his face after emerging from the Gators field house Thursday night. It felt great, the 16-year old fullback said after Bulloch battled Mount de Sales Academy in the teams spring football game at Gator Alley. Football is my favorite sport and I have been so ready to strap on the pads. The Gators ended their seven days of spring drills with a 48-minute, controlled scrimmage against the GISA Class AAA squad from Macon. Junior linebacker and wing back Ethan Lovett echoed his teammates sentiments. I love hitting people and being hit by people, said the 17-year old, as he rolled up his shirt sleeve to display the scrape left by an opponents face mask. Id rather play football than any other sport. To me, its the most competitive. I just love it. While no score was kept, the Gators scored five times against the Cavaliers; once on a short pass from quarterback Jordan Walker to tight end Paul Son, again when Walker broke a long run on an option keeper, runs by Poole and sophomore Troy Poulin and a pass from Walker to Lovett. The Cavs scored twice. We could actually see how good we may be this year, said sophomore center and linebacker Michael Deloach. We went up against a school thats supposed to be a lot bigger and better than us and we took it to them. Bulloch Academy head coach Clint Morgan was thrilled with the performance of the Gators. I was very pleased, he said. Its nice to have so many returning starters. The experience that they gained last year, coupled with an off-season weight program, will make for an exciting season. The game, according to Morgan, was just Bullochs sixth day in full pads and he could see the excitement in his players eyes during the contest. They realize that they have an opportunity to be a pretty good football team in the fall, said Morgan. We had a very good spring practice. Weve set very high goals for the upcoming season and this spring was a good starting point to help us reach those goals. I think we had a good spring practice, said Lovett. I think we are a much better football team right now than we were last spring. Weve got a lot of young talent coming up, especially in the rising freshman and sophomore classes. Lovett is one of nine rising seniors who helped lead the Gators to a 6-5 mark in a rebuilding season last year. Thirty names were on Bullochs roster and, while two were sidelined with injuries, most, if not all, got to see some playing time. During halftime, the teams rested their first teams and put their reserve units on the field for 10 plays each on offense and defense. It felt so good to get back out there, said the 15-year old Deloach. Man, do I love football.
