A big reason for Statesboro’s 3-0 start has been the pitching, including senior standout Forrest Robertson.
Robertson has started the season, picking up wins against South Effingham and Oconee County.
Robertson said he’s confident with the way the SHS pitchers have started off the season.
“Our pitching’s been excellent,” he said. “We just need to keep up our bats. Hitting wise we’ve struggled throughout the years — if we can keep it up this year we’ll be alright.”
At 5-foot-10, 180 pounds, Roberston features a fastball, curve and change-up. He said continuing to run, throwing from day-to-day and keeping his body free of “lactic acids” are key if he’s to keep up with his early success.
Robertson and Statesboro will be back on the field this weekend, hosting the Blue Devil Clash.
They’ll play Camden County Friday at 8 p.m. and Lee County Saturday at 3 p.m.
Jones shuts out competition
Lady Yellow Jacket keeper Kacey Jones is not one to hog attention, so — with sister Morgan doing a bulk of the scoring for Southeast Bulloch – it is easy for her to stay out of the spotlight.
“My team has helped me out a lot this year,” said Jones. “It has been a lot different from past years. Each year we progress — better defense, better offense —they keep the ball on the offensive side of the field.”
Don’t let Jones’ humble attitude fool you, though. In seven regular season contests, Jones has already amassed four shutouts and 27 saves. Although she has helped carry her team to an impressive record (5-1-1), Jones has not put a whole lot of thought into advancing her soccer career at the college level.
“She’s a good goalkeeper,” said SEB coach Aimee Civalier. “I think she could play at the college level, but she is not interested. She’s a pretty good basketball player, too.”
Jones, Civalier and the Jackets will take on Calvary Baptist at home on Thursday. The doubleheader kicks off at 5 p.m. The Lady Yellow Jackets are 2-0 in area play.
