Sprint South Track and Field is more than just a local track club.
Head coach Samose Mays founded the nonprofit AAU program in 2002 to give area kids a positive outlet in life and an opportunity to showcase and improve their talent. Sprint South also aims to increase their exposure and give the athletes a chance to face the best competition in the state and nation.
Open to boys and girls ages 6-18, Sprint South is looking for more athletes as its summer season approaches.
“We really want kids who are serious about track and want to take their skills to another level,” said Mays, a certified Level I USA Track and Field coach who holds the Statesboro High School record in the 300m intermediate hurdles (39.38). “We offer them an opportunity to continue their season and use the upcoming months to improve their skills.”
The team practices year round, and the summer season is comprised of three major meets beginning with the AAU District Championships June 7-10 in Savannah. The top six qualifiers in each event there advance to the Region 3B Championships slated for June 21-24 in Inman, S.C. The top four finishers in the region meet earn spots in the AAU Junior Olympic Games, which are July 25-Aug. 4 in Knoxville, Tenn.
The team will use the Georgia Games District Championship, an exhibition meet later this month, to gear up for the three major competitions.
This summer Mays is looking for big things from several athletes including Mahagony Lanier, a sixth grader at William James Middle School. Lanier advanced to the semifinals of the AAU Junior Olympics in the 100m in 2006, her first year running competitive track.
Mays also expects a good summer from Sarah Herndon, a Southeast Bulloch High junior whose new school record in the shot put (36’1”) was good for fourth place at the Class AA state meet. Other standouts are Wright Rockett, an eight-year-old Mattie Lively Elementary student who is undefeated this year in the 400m and 800m at the recreational level and Gerald Williams, a SEB junior who competes in the 100m and 200m.
Sprint South practices Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays throughout the summer at SEB. Mays is also available for track athletes interested in individual workouts.
