Mrs. Dorothy Louise (Rushing) Iler, 90, of Shellman Bluff, Ga., passed away at her residence after a long illness surrounded by her family, while under the care of Heartland Hospice in Brunswick, Ga.
Mrs. Iler was born in Statesboro, Ga., May 17, 1928, to Jack and Esther A. Rushing. She grew up in Savannah and worked briefly at the Savannah telephone company. She soon met the love of her life, Sands Iler, and The two were married in Savannah at Calvary Baptist church in 1947. After starting their family, they moved to Statesboro in 1968 and then to Shellman Bluff, Ga., in 1978.
Mrs. Iler spent her life caring for her husband and five children (two sets of twins). She was an excellent cook and loved fishing, playing cards and board games with her children and grandchildren.
In 1993, she and her husband and two sons began operating Shellman Fishcamp. She worked in the store with her husband and for many years made sure there was plenty of food for the family and anybody that was helping them with the business.
Mrs. Iler was a devoted wife, loving mother and proud grandmother and great-grandmother.
Mrs. Iler was a member of Shellman Bluff Baptist Church.
Most people who met her commented on her memorable smile.
Mrs. Iler was preceded in death by her parents, Jack and Esther Rushing; two sons, Gary (Gabo) Iler and Ron Iler.
She leaves behind many memories to be cherished by her husband of 71 years, Sands Iler of Shellman Bluff, Ga.; a son, Glenn Iler of Shellman Bluff; two daughters, Gwenn Chester (Adrian) of Statesboro and Sandra I. Dobbins (Don) of Statesboro; daughter-in-law, Evelyn Iler; sister, Mary Tuten of Savannah, Ga.; and a sister-in-law, Loucretia Hollingsworth of Mobile, Ala. Mrs. Iler is also survived by eight grandchildren, Lisa Sherrod (Kevin) of Statesboro, Ga.; Angela Snyder (Joseph) of Tucker, Ga.; Joye Glisson (Joshua) of South Carolina, Stephanie Daniel (Brian) of Macon, Ga.; Jack Iler and Josh Iler of Darien Ga.; Ginger Russell (Justin) of Vidalia, Ga.; Wesley Stewart (Savannah) of Alabama. Mrs. Iler was blessed with 17 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. Wednesday, the 13th of June 2018, at Shellman Bluff Baptist Church, followed by a funeral service at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Harry Coursey officiating. Interment will follow in Shellman Bluff Baptist Church Cemetery.
Serving as active pallbearers will be Bill Mercer, Jim Cooler, D.L. McIntosh, Jim Bruner, Gary Priester and Ricky Jackson.
The family has requested that in lieu of customary remembrances, memorials be made to Heartland Hospice, 664 Scranton Road, Suite 103, Brunswick, GA 31520.
Arrangements are entrusted to Edo Miller and Sons Funeral Home in Brunswick, Georgia.
