Mr. William Lester “Bill” Brannen
STATESBORO, Ga. -- Mr. William Lester “Bill” Brannen, age 65, died Sunday, August, 19, 2018, at Candler Hospital in Savannah following a brief illness.
Bill was born and raised in Statesboro, Ga. A graduate of Statesboro High School, Bill was an accomplished trumpeter during his high school years. He attended Georgia Southern University, graduating with a business degree, and was a member of the Sigma Chi fraternity.
He was the owner and operator of Southside Beverage and Gas Station in Statesboro for many years. He was also a land developer throughout Bulloch and surrounding counties.
From an early age, Bill showed a strong love for land and animals. He began his journey in life showing the unique Charolais cows at the Kiwanis Ogeechee Fair. From there, he and his father harvested timber from their family land, using one timber tuff to clean each log. The cabin once built and cherished by all of the family is still being enjoyed today by his children and grandchildren.
Throughout the years, he raised peacocks, rescued baby deer and quarter horses. He was an accomplished schutzhund instructor, holding one of the highest rankings for his dog training, leading service dogs and police dogs to a proper level of training to protect our community.
His eclectic personality led him to have interest in breeding and raising exotic tropical Macaws. Most recently, he held blue ribbon placement with one of 32 alpacas on his farm, which, for the past 12 years, have brought peace and joy to his soul.
Bill had a strong bond with the land his family still takes great pride in today. He pioneered the acreage with a vision from the book, "On Golden Pond." The proximity in which he lived to his sisters created a very strong relationship. The Brannen family will always and forever see the heart and soul of Bill when the sun’s rays shine through the pecan trees on a long summer sunset.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Lester and Sara Cash Brannen; and longtime friend, Bob Bell.
Bill is survived by his son, Les Brannen, and wife, Jennifer Brannen of Marietta, Georgia; his daughter, Brooke Davis, and husband, Trey Davis, of Fairhope, Alabama; five grandchildren, Skyla Brannen, August Brannen, Jude Brannen, Lucy Davis and Wells Davis; his two sisters and brother-in-law, Emily and Garrett Nevil and Janice Wilbanks, all of Statesboro. He is also survived by his former wife and mother of their two children, Val Daniel. Bill also had six nieces and nephews, Ginny Smith, Amanda Cartee, Nancy Bielawski, JJ and wife, Amy Altman; Jill and husband, Bill Vickery; and Jana and husband, David Newland.
The family will receive visitors on Saturday from 1 p.m. until 2:30 p.m. at Joiner-Anderson Funeral Home in Statesboro.
A graveside service and interment will follow at 3 p.m. in Lower Lotts Creek Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery.
