STATESBORO, Ga. -- Mr. James Carlton “Carl” Bishop, age 96, died Monday at his residence surrounded by his family and under the care of Ogeechee Area Hospice. The native and lifelong resident of Bulloch County was the son of George C. Bishop and Addie Smith Bishop.
    He was employed for many years with Brooks Instrument in Statesboro. While Emit Deal was serving as chairman of the Bulloch County Board of Commissioners, he hired Carl to begin and manage the Bulloch County Solid Waste program. He served until his retirement in the mid-1970s.
    Throughout his life, Carl enjoyed being a farmer and tending his family farm. Additionally, he and his wife began volunteering for the Bulloch Memorial Hospital Auxiliary, which later became East Georgia Regional Medical Center. He retired from his volunteer position two weeks ago with over 20 years of dedicated service.
    He was an active member of Friendship Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon, a former choir director and a member of the Joy Sunday School Class. He additionally had served as a substitute choir director for Gracewood Baptist Church and was a member of the “Bulloch Four” quartet.
    He was preceded in death by his parents, a son, Jimmy Carlton Bishop; and a sister, Mary Lee Bishop.
    Surviving are his wife of 66 years, Mattie Ruth Lanier Bishop of Statesboro; a daughter and son-in-law, Janis and Rodney Williams of Winston-Salem, N.C.; two granddaughters and their husbands, Sara and Chris Smith of Statesboro and Hanna and Daniel Stanley of Winston-Salem, N.C.; five great-grandchildren, Tyler Smith, Mattie Smith, Landon Stanley, Cooper Stanley and Brooklyn Stanley; and his sister, Sadie Hendrick of Statesboro.
    The funeral service will be Thursday at 11 a.m. at Friendship Baptist Church with the Rev. Tony Pagliarullo officiating.
    The body will lie in state one hour prior to the service.
    Interment will be in the church cemetery.
    Pallbearers will be Ed Szczepanik, Jody Wiggins, Al Clark, Tim Erdmier, Kelly Lanier, Jeff Lanier and William Lee.
    Honorary pallbearers will be Brian Daniels, Waldo Colson, Thomas Chester, Kenny Stewart, Wendell Best, members of the Joy Sunday School Class and the deacons of the church.
    The family requests that memorial contributions be made to the Georgia Baptist Children’s Home, c/o Central Office, P.O. Box 329, Palmetto, Georgia; www.gbchfm.org/; or a children’s charity of the donor’s choice.
