STATESBORO, Ga. -- Mr. Donald Eugene Spence, age 71, died on Wednesday, November 28, 2018, at the Candler County Hospital in Metter, Georgia, following a brief illness.
    The Bulloch County native was born at home on his family’s farm near Statesboro. Donald graduated from Portal High School in 1965. He immediately began his military service with the U.S. Army, serving for two years.
    Following his military service, Donald began working at Rockwell Manufacturing Co., where he worked for two years until he began working with Tom’s Peanut Company. Donald later began his career as an exterminator, working with Gary Bland at Getz Exterminators for several years. Donald began his own business, when he started Don’s Pest Control, which he owned and operated until his retirement in 2009.
    He enjoyed collecting arrowheads and war relics.
    Donald was known for his sense of humor and the opportunity to get a laugh from someone.
    His greatest joy and love was his family, especially his two grandchildren, Carson and Delaney.
    He was a member of Friendship Baptist Church.
    Donald was preceded in death by his parents, Lit Spence and Ila Mae Skinner Spence; and his mother-in-law and father-in-law, Jeanette and Remer Barnes.
    Surviving are his wife of 48 years, Melanie Barnes Spence; a daughter and son-in-law, Shannon and Byron Davis; two grandchildren, Carson and Delaney Davis; a sister and brother-in-law, Glenda and Wendell Best; a nephew, Jason Best; and a niece and her husband, Raina and Jason Mallard, all of Statesboro.
    The family will receive visitors on Friday from 5 p.m. until 8 p.m. at Joiner-Anderson Funeral Home in Statesboro.
    The funeral service will be Saturday at 2 p.m. in the chapel of Joiner-Anderson Funeral Home in Statesboro with Elder Jack Anderson and Elder Jason Mallard officiating. Interment will be in Friendship Baptist Church Cemetery with the Rev. Tony Pagliarullo officiating.
    Pallbearers will be Kevin Spence, Alan Spence, Stacy Spence, Jeff Spence, Jackie Skinner, Steve Tanner and Jake Beasley.
    Honorary pallbearers will be Tracy Mixon, Ricky Mixon, Ashley Mixon, Les Spence, Lannie Lanier, Steve Brown, Gary Bland and Rochel Bland.
    The family requests that memorial contributions be made to Nevils Creek Primitive Baptist Church, 4203 Two Chop Road, Statesboro, Georgia 30461.
