A Wadley police officer was killed early Monday morning in a car accident outside of Metter on his way to police certification training in Statesboro.

Georgia State Patrol Post 45 Trooper 1st Class Hunter Oglesby said details of the two-vehicle crash were unavailable Monday, as reports were incomplete and the investigation was ongoing, but he said that the families of both people involved had been notified of the collision, which took place around 6:40 a.m. on Highway 121 near Canoochee Road.

Lawrence Thomas Forrest, 37, of Wadley, was killed. The other driver, Alpeshkumaar Patel, 40, of Metter, was taken to Memorial University Medical Center in Savannah with what Oglesby described as "serious injuries."

Forrest, who worked for the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office before being hired by the Wadley Police Department, had been on his way to Ogeechee Technical College in Statesboro to attend mandated classes, Oglesby said.

Further details about the crash are expected Tuesday.
