Three Metter residents were killed Saturday afternoon in a single vehicle crash on Interstate 16 near Exit 116, according to reports from Georgia State Patrol Post 45 in Statesboro
Georgia State Patrol Sr. Trooper R. Helton responded to the crash, reported around 5:38 p.m., and discovered that a red 1998 Ford Contour traveling westbound had left the roadway, crossed the median, crossed both lanes of eastbound traffic and sailed across the ditch into the woods, striking several trees.
Cassie Smith, 24, Huiett Street, Metter; Cortney Collins, an 18-year-old male, South Rountree Street, Metter; and 16-year-old Kaiswania Polk died in the crash, he said in reports.
It is unknown which victim was driving, as all three were not wearing seat belts and were ejected from the vehicle, he said. No other information was available about the accident.
The accident is being investigated by the Georgia State Patrol Specialized Collision Reconstruction Team.
Alcohol tests are pending on the victims, reports stated. Such tests are routine in traffic crashes resulting in serious injuries or fatalities.
