An ongoing investigation by officials at a local retail store resulted in police charging three, including a store employee, with felony shoplifting Monday.
Statesboro Police Det. Tommy Brown and Advanced Patrol Officer Brandy Lee responded around 8:20 p.m. Monday to Wal-Mart Supercenter, where Greg Shelton, a manager, told them an employee allowed two others to leave without paying for some items, said Statesboro Police Capt. L. C. Williams, criminal investigations division commander.
The employee, later charged with several counts of shoplifting, was Marthy Worrell Wren Jr., 24, Eagles Landing Apartments, he said.
"Greg stated that Marthy has been letting friends of his come through his checkout line without scanning some of their products," he said. "Marthy would ring up part of their products, and then bag all items up and they would leave the store without paying."
Shelton detained two of the suspects Monday night before calling police, and " the third suspect turned himself in to the Statesboro Police Department a short time later," Williams said.
Marthy Wren Jr. was charged with four counts of felony shoplifting and eight counts of misdemeanor shoplifting, he said.
Anthony Barnett Jr., 23, and Marlow Wren, 22, both listed as having an Eagles Landing Apartments address, were each charged with one count of felony shoplifting, he said.
The three were taken to the Bulloch County Jail, where they were all held without bond Wednesday evening, according to jail records.
