Suspect in attack, car theft arrested
Robert Lee Whitting

A man wanted for hiding under a bed, attacking a woman and stealing her car is now behind bars.
Bulloch County Sheriff Lynn Anderson said Robert Lee Whitting, 44, West Forest Circle, was apprehended Tuesday at a Millen motel by members of the United States Marshal’s Service Southeast Regional Fugitive Task Force.
Whitting reportedly stalked his ex-girlfriend before hiding under her bed then attacking her two weeks ago, he said. Then he stole her cell phone and car.
Statesboro Police reports show the victim filed complaints of Whitting stalking her before the attack.  Some reported stalking incidents took place within the city limits and included texts and phone calls threatening her and family members with bodily harm.
Whitting, who was released on parole in October after having served three years on a terroristic threats conviction,  hid under the victim’s bed and lay in wait for her to return home to her Eagle Trace Villas residence, Anderson said.
He then “crawled out from under the bed and physically assaulted her,” causing injuries that required medical attention at a
hospital, he said.
“The victim stated during interviews with patrol deputies that she had just ended a relationship with Whitting,” Anderson said. She said he also “grabbed (her) cell phone so she could not call 911.”
Whitting then stole the victim’s keys and fled in her white 2001 Buick Park Avenue. Whitting remains in the Bulloch County Jail without bond on charges of burglary, motor vehicle theft, battery and obstruction of emergency phone calls.
