The second of two assistant high school coaches accused last year in separate cases of inappropriate contact with students was indicted earlier this month.
Luke Edward Parks, of Jesup, an assistant coach at Statesboro High School, was arrested in April 2014 on charges of felony exploitation of children and sexual assault after Statesboro police investigated reports of inappropriate conduct with a 16-year-old female student.
His arrest in 2014 came around the same time another assistant coach, Jeffrey Tyler Crowder, 25, of Mike-Ann Drive, was arrested on similar charges. Police said the two cases are not connected.
Crowder pled guilty in February and was sentenced to 15 months in a probation detention center, 10 years' probation and $3,000 in fines and must undergo a drug and alcohol evaluation. He also must not contact the victim, is banned from the Ogeechee Judicial District and must register as a convicted sex offender.
A Bulloch County grand jury indicted Parks March 9 on charges of criminal attempt to commit sexual assault by a person with disciplinary or supervisory authority. He remains free on bond that was set following his arrest last year.
According to the indictment, Parks, sometime between Nov. 25, 2013, and April 25, 2014, the "exact date of offense being unknown ... did perform an act which constitutes a substantial step towards the commission of said crime by texting and communicating with (a 16-year-old female student) via social media sites and in person, while (the victim) was a student at Statesboro High School, and attempting to engage in sexual conduct with said student whom the accused had supervisory authority over."
Bulloch County Clerk of Courts Office records show Parks, 27, is slated to appear before a judge for a plea calendar hearing June 8.
