Police: Portal man hits wife with car
She's stable; he's in jail

A Portal woman was airlifted to Savannah on Sunday after her husband struck her with a truck.

Jeffrey Lee Jones of Jones Street in Portal is charged with aggravated assault, DUI/less safe, hit-and-run and driving with a suspended license, according to Georgia State Patrol Post 45 reports.

Portal police Chief Jason Sapp said that Jones, 52, and his wife, Shirley Jones, were engaged in a domestic argument Sunday afternoon when he left, striking her with his truck on Highway 80 near Roundtree Street in Portal.

Georgia State Patrol Trooper 1st Class R.L. Scott responded to the scene, and Jeffrey Jones was located at his mother's house on Jones Street, Sapp said.

He was taken to the Bulloch County Jail, where he remains without bond, according to jail records.

Shirley Jones was taken by Air Evac to Memorial University Medical Center in Savannah. Sapp said her family members reported Monday that she was in stable condition.
