Police: Local man robbed during apparent set-up
Computer dating site leads to armed robbery

When a man visited a Southern Downs apartment Thursday night, he expected to meet a woman he had never met, but only talked to online. Before he could knock on the door, he was robbed, police said.

It turned out the woman who lives at the apartment was not involved in the apparent set-up and was not “who the man believed he had talked to,” said Statesboro Police Community Information Specialist Madison Warren.

The victim had been communicating with someone he believed to be a female via a computer dating site, and expected to meet the person at the Lanier Drive apartment, she said.

Instead, he was approached by an unknown male who robbed him at gunpoint. The victim “emptied his pockets” and the suspect fled, she said.

Reports did not disclose items taken or the amount of any cash that may have been stolen.

The victim left the scene and stopped at a nearby business to call 911. Warren said he was not injured.

During the reported armed robbery, the female who lived in the apartment where it occurred called police as well, reporting suspicious activity, she said.
