Uncle Shug’s owner Stacy Underwood has done it again. The “new” Uncle Shugs on Main (formally R.J.’s Grill) has knocked it out of the park. The restaurant has an entirely new look and feel. Even the parking lot has been repaved and restriped. The exterior includes the signature Uncle Shugs red shutters and accent lighting and signage that signals a fresh new start.
Inside the restaurant, you will see fresh paint with lighter, softer colors and the popular line service has reopened. The line is different now with openings into the front dining room that gives it a much more inviting feel.
The biggest surprise is the expanded cafeteria-style buffet on the line, which includes a great blue-plate selection along with some of the more popular items from the R.J.’s menu and the other Uncle Shug’s locations. R.J.’s best sellers like their hand cut USDA Steaks and fresh from the ocean shrimp and hamburgers are available by order through the line.
You will be pleasantly surprised by not only the selection of food, but also the quality and price. For around $8 plus tea for only $1 it is quick, delicious and a great deal.
Nearly two years after purchasing one of Statesboro’s most iconic restaurants, R.J.’s Grill and saving it from closing, it seems owner Stacy Underwood has finally figured it out.
“Manager James Fraley, my staff and I have simply listened to what our customers want. We have assembled all of their ideas and created a restaurant that gives them exactly what they have been asking for,” said Stacy Underwood. “The overwhelming positive response is validation that our customers love what we are doing. I want to personally invite everyone to try us. I know you will love it also!”
Uncle Shugs on Main is open daily. Monday through Friday they are open from 7AM to 2PM with cooked to order breakfast and lunch buffett and reopens from 5PM to 9PM with dinner buffet. Saturday they are open all day and have continued with the popular Saturday breakfast buffet. Sunday they will open from 11 to 3 serving the famous Sunday Buffet. The Saturday and Sunday buffets will continue to be set up in the middle of the restaurant. The only difference is you will enter the restaurant through the line.
They continue to offer meeting space and supply meetings with their own buffets to allow entrance into the meetings directly from the rear of the building without having to go through the line. Outside catering and providing great meeting space inside the restaurant continues to be a big part of their business. Civic and business organizations that they cater to on a weekly or regular basis and who meet at the restaurant weekly or regularly have noticed no change.
Uncle Shug’s Chicken Barn and Uncle Shug’s BBQ Place are continuing normal operations. This addition and change has not affected them in any way.
Making the Blue Mile Great Again has been a commitment and focus of Stacy’s since he saved R.J.s from the brink of death. It is an important part of our communities history and vital to have a successful restaurant on the Blue Mile.
