Police captured a domestic violence suspect early Friday morning after a two-hour standoff, during which the suspect barricaded himself with his twin toddlers inside his North Main Street home.

Cameron Douglas Jones, 32, is charged with battery and criminal trespass. He was taken to the Bulloch County Jail after negotiators talked him into giving himself up.

Statesboro police Officer Dustin Lanier was completing paperwork from a previous case while sitting in his car in the Bulloch County Sheriff's Office parking lot around 3:15 a.m. Friday when a woman approached him, bruised and claiming to be the victim of domestic abuse, Statesboro Public Safety Director Wendell Turner said in a news release.

The victim, Jessica Brown Jones, 29, who lives at the same North Main Street address as her husband, Cameron Douglas Jones, said the two had been involved in a physical domestic dispute at their residence. She "had visible bruising on her face and body," Turner said.

Jessica Jones told police that there were firearms in the home and that her husband had made threats to harm himself, her and their 3-year-old twin girls in the past.

Both Lanier and police dispatchers tried to contact Cameron Jones at the home by phone but were unsuccessful.

"At approximately 4 a.m. it became apparent Cameron was refusing contact and refusing to exit the residence," Turner said in the release.

The suspect was inside with the twins, who were asleep during the ordeal, he said.

"The Statesboro Police Department Emergency Response Team and negotiator were immediately contacted and began making preparations to safely recover Cameron and the twins from the residence," Turner said.

The Bulloch County Sheriff's Office Tactical Apprehension and Control team also assisted, as did sheriff's deputies.

After several attempts, the negotiator, Det. Lt. James Winskey, as well as sheriff's Capt. Todd Mashburn, finally reached the suspect by phone. Negotiators "successfully persuaded Cameron to exit the residence peacefully" around 5:45 a.m.

"The twin girls were safely removed from the home and appear to have been asleep throughout the event," said Turner, who credited the "successful resolution to a swift and exceptional response" by the on-duty shift led by Statesboro police Sgt. Eric Simms. He also expressed thanks to Georgia Southern University police, who "helped answer calls for service around the campus to free up more Statesboro Police resources utilized at the scene."

All agencies involved "did an excellent job coordinating and preparing for multiple possible outcomes and were able to resolve the situation peacefully without incident or injury," Turner said in the statement.

Cameron Jones remained in the Bulloch County Jail on Friday afternoon, awaiting bond and other hearings.
